National Impact and Ethnic Backing

Though mainly known as an government critic, Odinga became head of government in 2008 and also formed a political pact with the leader last year in a public service marked by evolving coalitions.

He generated strong loyalty among adherents, notably in his ethnic group based in the nation's western region, many of whom believe he was deprived of the highest office by electoral fraud.
