A deadly train derailment in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel opposition criticisms regarding the pace and execution of the country's major government projects.
The disaster happened on the trans-isthmus railway, a line developed to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was intended to provide an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring economic development in the area.
“We are going to meticulously determine the reasons behind this accident,” stated the national leader.
The leader reported that, of the some 250 people on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in critical condition. The leader stated plans to travel to Oaxaca to meet those involved.
Flagship Project of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone development scheme of the previous administration, whose presidency concluded the previous year. This rail line was a hallmark of his administration's developmental goals for the southeastern region.
Another multi-billion dollar railway undertaking from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the broader strategy to stimulate the economy of a relatively poorer part of the country.
Building Management and Safety Concerns
The building of both train projects was supervised by the armed forces, marking a dramatic increase of its duties in public infrastructure. They were completed at an fast-tracked speed, defying forecasts to be partially inaugurated before the end of that government.
However, this accelerated timeline had simultaneously fueled ongoing concerns over construction quality.
- Sunday's accident was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This involves an prior collision this month when a train struck a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced a couple of non-deadly derailments.
Calls for Audit and Pause
In the aftermath of the disaster, the head of a key rival party urged an prompt halt in the building and running of all such projects.
This halt was proposed pending a comprehensive safety audit. The party stated that the situation "requires immediate answers."
In response, the national leader insisted that the train had been functioning in full compliance with all security protocols. Commitments were given that the government would continue to be "accountable" in both the construction and operation of these strategic initiatives.
